Red Leafs Win (x2) | POSTGAME Report - SFU tops UAF (NCAA D1), BCIHL team tops undefeated UVIC at Queen's Park Arena
Friday, November 8th 2025
SFU earned two long overdue wins on Friday night, capping a big week for both the Red Leafs Non-Conference and BCIHL squads.
After a fun start to the week with a visit from Oxygen Yoga for some chilly warmup stretches, the SFU Non-Conference team headed north to Fairbanks to take on a familiar rival in University of Alaska Nanooks. The varsity women's volleyball team happened to be in town taking on the Nanooks as well, offering fans a rare multi-sport Red Leafs doubleheader. SFU, now 3-7-2 on the season, was overdue for a win after a string of heartbreaking losses at the NCAA D1 level to FSU (3-2 overtime), LSU (3-2 regulation), Princeton (2-0 regulation) and LIU (3-2 regulation).
SFU is now 2-2 against UAF in exhibition play over the past 5 seasons.

It was hockey that earned the W, defeating the Nanooks in a shootout thriller, with Ceccarelli scoring the lone regulation goal and Erickson and Schmidt converting shooutout attempts. The final shots were 34-27 in favor of Alaska, while SFU netminder Jesse Makaj picked up the win.

Jesse Makaj seals it with a save
SFU now looks ahead to a pair of home games against another familiar rival in ACHA Division 1 Maryville University, taking place on December 5th and 6th at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby. The games will feature a Teddy Bear Toss on December 5th, and a Shoot to Win a 2026 Nissan Kicks on December 6th. Tickets are on sale now at tickets.sfuhockey.com

Back home, the BCIHL club had a big game as well, hosting defending champs and undefeated UVIC for a regular season game at Queen's Park Arena in New Westminster in front of crowd of 407 at the old barn. SFU has 2 regular season games scheduled at Queen's Park in 25/26, which has served as the team's training facility for the past 2 seasons.
The game featured a visit from the Royal Canadian Legion New Westminster branch and retired captain Terry Leith for a ceremonial puck drop and pre-game moment of silence.

The game also raised much needed funds for BC Blind Sports, and featured special guests from New West, Burnaby and Coquitlam Minor Hockey Associations.
SFU would skate to a 5-1 win over UVIC, handing the Vikes their first loss of the season. The Red Leafs goals were scored by Ben Ruthven (2), Connor Jarvis (1), Samuel Brown (3), Nathan Bran (1) and Evan Fedele (2).
The BCIHL team is back at a more familiar venue this Friday with their first game against the VIU Mariners on Friday November 14th at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
