RECAP | Red Leafs Win Shootout Thriller over UBC
VANCOUVER, BC – The Red Leafs will start the season 1-0-0 with a shootout victory over their rival UBC Thunderbirds.
Lucas Ceccarelli (1-1–2) started the scoring at the 16 minute mark with the assist coming from Kyle Young (0-1–1). The Red Leafs would hold the Thunderbirds to just 10 shots in the first, all stopped by Jesse Makaj.
Penalty trouble would be the story of the second as both Tyler Chan and Carter Schmidt were both called at the 0:51 mark, giving UBC a 5-on-3 opportunity. The Thunderbirds would capitalize on both the 2-man advantage and the remaining power play to take a 2-1 lead, but some late period work from Walker Erickson (1-0–1) would tie the game headed to the third.
Goaltender Steven Bacovsky took the net to start the third, which saw a combined 55 penalty minutes and 4 misconducts as tensions rose between the rival clubs. The Red Leafs and Thunderbirds would trade goals and would send the game to overtime, and eventually the shootout.
Round 1 saw Liam Kindree for UBC and Greye Rampton for SFU; Bacovsky would stop Kindree’s shot while Rampton would put it past goaltender Cole Schwebius for a 1-0 shootout lead. Then in round 2, UBC’s Ty Thorpe would be stopped again by Bacovsky, and SFU’s Max Potvin would finish the game and win the shootout for the Red Leafs. Bacovsky is credited with his first win with SFU, stopping 17 of 18 shots and both attempts in the shootout.
The Red Leafs are set to host the rematch with the Thunderbirds next Friday, September 19th at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, BC. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
