BURNABY, BC – After a two week break in the schedule, SFU welcomes Maryville University to Burnaby for the first of two home games to kick off November.

The Red Leafs return home after a challenging October where the team struggled to find the win column but showed their offensive potential, scoring 11 goals over the span of 5 games compared to only 8 scored over 6 games in a similar span last season. Leading that charge up front is Walker Erickson (1.25 P/G) and Max Potvin (1.11 P/G), each with 10 points through the team’s first 9 games of the season.

“After last year’s experience, knowing what we needed and evaluating what it’s going to take to play at this level on an everyday basis, I think we handled ourselves well,” said Head Coach Mark Coletta on the latest episode of Rise In Red | The SFU Red Leafs Hockey Podcast, “It’s disappointing when you lose these games because you’re not playing hoping just to be competitive…the message is that we have to win these games.”

The Maryville Saints come into the weekend ranked at #15 in the ACHA with a 7-4-1 record, going 2-3-0 in their last 5 games before making the trip from Missouri to British Columbia. 24 of the team’s 31 rostered players are Canadian, including 6 British Columbians, and Maryville Head Coach John Hogan has described the games in Burnaby as “a fun trip against a possible NCAA D1 transitionary team in Simon Fraser.”

“Having some home games against American competition is good for us and the program,” said Coletta, “Maryville is one of those programs that are exploring that option [to join the NCAA], and hopefully that can be a catalyst for other programs to do the same; maybe even us.”

Leading the Saints in scoring is St. Louis native Maxwell Wagener with 17 points in the team’s 12 games, scoring at a 1.42 p/g rate. Forward Felix Turcotte of Quebec leads the Canadian skaters on the team with 7 points in 10 games, and goaltender Lucas Bain of London, ON is anticipated to start at least one of the games for the Saints, holding a .896 sv% and 2.83 GAA in 6 games played.

In our mission to #FillTheBill for this weekend, SFU students with valid SFU ID or proof of enrolment will be admitted for free, and general admission tickets are $12 advance, $15 at the door. If you are unable to make the game but still want to tune in, you can head to Biercraft UniverCity on campus to watch and on YouTube from wherever you are. As always, you can follow us on Twitter / X and Instagram for live updates throughout the night.
