GAMEDAY | Red Leafs kick off season in Vancouver against Thunderbirds

VANCOUVER, BC – A new look Simon Fraser University Red Leafs squad will kick off the 2025.26 season tonight as they’re set to face the University of British Columbia for the first of two matchups in September.

For the independent team’s third year, the Red Leafs will look to get off to a stronger start against the rival Thunderbirds before the home opener next weekend. Returning forward and 2025 season leading scorer Max Potvin will look to continue his success against the Thunderbirds as he put up a goal and assist in his first appearance against UBC.

UBC’s 2024.25 season did not start the way they anticipated, with the team posting a 3-4-1 record in the month of October to start the year. Despite making it to the Usports-CanadaWest semifinals to end the season, the Thunderbirds will look to some of their new recruits in goaltender Nick Jones (WHL) and skaters Wolfgang Govedaris (NCAA) and Quinn Disher (BCHL) to help bring the team back to the University Cup in 2026.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm at the Father David Bauer Arena on the UBC Campus.
