SFU Hockey is proud to introduce Zack Klebaum as the seventh member of the 2016/17 recruiting class. The defenceman, a native of Saskatoon Saskatchewan, wrapped up his junior career with the Kindersley Kilppers and will be joined on the Clan by two Klippers teammates this fall.
Klebaum is the third defenceman to join the team this offseason and second from the SJHL, joining with Jayden Piattelli. Aside from a short stint with the Dauphin Kings last season, he spent his entire junior career in the Saskatchewan league. The defensive minded defenceman put up a combined 25 points (3g 22a) in 128 games over three seasons of Junior “A” hockey.
His former coach Geoff Grimwood describes him as “one of those guys who will do anything to play.” SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta looks forward to having him with the team as he “expects a great work ethic and energy” from Klebaum. Given the set roster of university sports Klebaum brings an added benefit that will help the team in case of injuries “He has some versatility to his game, he can play either defense or forward, this could be very valuable moving forward” added Coletta.
When asked about joining SFU and his goals Klebaum said “Aside from winning a BCIHL title, my goals are to continue to develop my skills, while attaining a prestigious education.” Klebaum will be enrolling at SFU with plans to enter into the Beedie School of Business.
Klebaum is the seventh recruit for the 2016-17 season for SFU. The Clan are poised to have a very strong recruiting class as they look to bounce back after a disappointing end to 2015/16. Three more 2016/17 recruit announcements are expected before the start of training camp on August 29th.
SFU Men’s Hockey was re-established in 2004 and competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. The program focuses on competition, academics, and community service as its core values. For more information about the SFU Hockey program, please visit www.sfuhockey.com.
