Over the weekend, the SFU Men’s Hockey Team headed to Alaska to face the two NCAA Division I schools in the state in exhibition matches.
On Friday, September 29, SFU took on the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, and on Saturday, September 30, they faced the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
In Friday’s contest, the Nanooks scored a buzzer beater to go up 1-0 to end the first period. In the second and third period, Fairbanks put up five goals to take the game 6-0.
Goaltender Lyndon Stanwood looked sharp as he made 47 saves on 53 shots. SFU finished with 20 shots.
On Saturday, SFU allowed four goals in the first period to Anchorage, but didn’t allow any in the second frame. Freshman Eric Callegari scored for the Clan, with an assist from Brendan Lamont.
The Seawolves put up two more in the third period to make it 6-1. Anchorage outshot SFU 26-20.
Stanwood split goaltending duties with Ryan Sandrin.
SFU looks forward to the beginning of the BCIHL season this weekend, as they begin on the road with back-to-back games against Selkirk College and Eastern Washington on Friday and Saturday. The Clan will open at home the following Saturday against the Vancouver Island University Mariners, who are playing their first season in the BCIHL.
