BURNABY, BC — SFU Hockey is proud to announce Nipawin Hawks defenceman Jack Lenchyshyn as the newest member of the 2021/22 recruiting class.
“To someone who hasn’t seen me play, I’d describe myself as a puck-moving d-man that loves to get involved offensively but also enjoys the physical side of the game,” said the 6’0”, 209 lb defenceman. “My goal for the season is to make an immediate impact in pushing the team to another championship.”
A veteran of the SJHL and MJHL, Lenchyshyn brings with him Junior A experience.
Over the past three seasons, Lenchyshyn has been a key part of the Nipawin Hawks blue line, putting up 44 points in 104 regular season games with the team. In the 2019/20 season, he led the Hawks defense in assists with 23 in 47 regular season games. In the shortened 2020/21 season, he was named an assistant captain.
He was teammates with fellow SFU recruit Austen Flaman during the 2018/19 season on the Hawks.
Prior to joining the Hawks, Lenchyshyn played with his hometown team, the Steinbach Pistons of the MJHL. In his first season of junior in 2017/18, he won the league title with the Pistons, and they went on to win the ANAVET Cup against the Hawks.
“He’s a solid defenceman, plays the game the right way — tough, hard-nosed, and makes it hard for the other team to play against,” said head coach Mark Coletta. “The back end is definitely something we want to make sure we’re properly set up for, with guys who are mobile, with guys who play at the Junior A level, and guys who can keep it simple.”
Lenchyshyn intends to study business at SFU.
