Simon Fraser University forward Jono Ceci has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League’s Player of the Week for the week ending October 12th.
On Friday, Ceci helped lead the Clan to a decisive 6-2 victory over Selkirk College, the two-time defending league champions, in the team’s home opener at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
The highlight of the game was a second period goal from the fourth-year forward that vaulted him past former SFU captain Paul Moscone into top spot as Simon Fraser’s all-time points leader. He went on to add an assist on a third period power-play that put the game out of reach.
Ceci has been one of the league’s best and most consistent scoring threats over the past three seasons, having scored 47 goals and adding 83 assists in just 71 regular season games. He now trails just one player — former UCFV standout Robert Vos, with 157 points — for the BCIHL’s career scoring lead.
He looks likely to reach that milestone with another strong season after beginning with five points in three games.
Runners up for this week’s award include Trinity Western University forward Cody Fidgett, Eastern Washington University forward Beau Walker and University of Victoria defenceman Chris Manhas.
