Fifth year forward Jono Ceci had three points — two goals and an assist — to tie the all-time BCIHL scoring record and help the SFU Men’s Hockey Team beat the University of Victoria Vikes 4-1 on the road Friday night. The following night, however, the Vikes had the upper hand, winning 5-1.

With a little over five minutes left in the first period Friday night, Ceci opened the scoring with his second goal of the year, with assists from Tyler Basham and Brendan Lamont.

UVic tied the game midway through the second period on the power play, but freshman Clan forward Jamie Waddington netted his first BCIHL goal to put SFU back in the lead. Waddington had 17 goals and 32 points last season with the Drayton Valley Thunder of the AJHL, an Albertan Junior A hockey league.

Goals from Basham, who leads the team in goals and points with six and 12 and is sixth in BCIHL scoring, and Ceci would conclude the game 4-1 in SFU’s favour. Jordan Liem saved 30 of 31 shots (.968 SV%).

Saturday night was a different story. Fourth year Vikes forward Shawn Mueller opened the scoring with the first of two goals on the night.

Basham would provide SFU’s only goal on the power play, down 4-0, midway through the third period. Defencemen Dustin Cave and Robson Cramer were credited with the assists, marking Cave’s first BCIHL point.

A comeback was not to be as Mueller netted one more for the Vikes to win it 5-1, despite SFU outshooting UVic 46-29.

SFU will look to rebound this Saturday when they return home to the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in a rematch against the Trinity Western Spartans. SFU is looking for revenge after falling 3-2 at the Langley Events Centre on November 14. The season series is tied 1-1, and both teams are tied with 10 points in the BCIHL standings, but the Spartans have the edge with two less games played. Ceci will have a chance to break the BCIHL scoring record on home ice.

Saturday will be Suits and Staches night as Joseph and Chanan will give away one free custom at the game, and former Canucks defenceman Dave Babych will make an appearance at the game, taking pictures and giving autographs by donation to Movember. SFU students get in free with student ID. Game starts at 7 pm.
