BURNABY – SFU Hockey is pleased and excited to announce the addition of ’98 born forward Nick Wicks to the roster for the 2021/22 season.
Wicks joins SFU from the NCAA Division I ECAC Hockey conference, spending his last two years with the Clarkson University Golden Knights in Potsdam, New York, and the year before with the independent NCAA Division I University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, tallying 19 points in 47 games with the clubs.
“Playing in the states was a lot of fun,” said Wicks in an interview, “it was a good experience, lots of travel, but I’m glad to be home.”
Before his time in the NCAA, Wicks captained the 2018-19 BCHL Merritt Centennials, putting up 59 points in 58 games at the Junior A level.
With the resume he has, Wicks brings a wealth of high-level experience from the BCHL and NCAA to an already strong SFU club.
“I know a few of the guys on the team, and after talking to the coach I felt that it would be a good fit for me here.”
Head coach Mark Coletta had nothing but praises for Wicks after working with him over the past few weeks.
“He’s a very dynamic player,” said Coletta, “he’s played at that NCAA Division I level; he’s offensively gifted, and he brings a scoring prowess to our team.”
With a 6-0 record, it’s not easy drawing a new player into the lineup, especially when the record came at the hands of 15 of 18 possible skaters, with more players vying for spots come January.
“It’s always difficult to bring a guy in halfway, especially when you’re having success,” Coletta added, “but like I said, he’s a very dynamic player, he knows a few of the guys on the team already, and he’ll be an addition regardless with the talent he brings.”
Wicks will make his SFU debut on Jan. 7th as we host the UBC Thunderbirds for our 2022 Spring Kickoff, and his BCIHL debut the following weekend on Jan. 14th and 15th at home against the UVic Vikes.
