For Immediate Release:
SFU Hockey is proud to announce the second commitment of the 2017/18 season, Cam Bertsch. The native of Surrey and Cloverdale Minor Hockey alumni brings with him over 192 games of Junior hockey experience, split predominantly between the Coquitlam Express and Mission City Outlaws. A forward, he collected 33 goals and 89 assists during five seasons in junior.
While injuries limited Bertsch to just 23 games last year with the Express, he is expected to have a bounce back season and contribute right away for SFU. “His speed and offensive ability will be an asset for us, and he’ll fit into our system very well” said SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta. His former coach Barry Wolff feels he’ll be a great addition to the team because of his skill set and hockey smarts. “He’s got a great release, and is great at finding open ice to make plays.” Bertsch describes his style of play as a “two-way forward with a high compete level.”
The signing is part of a continued commitment from Head Coach Mark Coletta to put an extra emphasis on character for new recruits. “Cam is a great kid, and we put a premium on bringing in players like him because that’s the best way to build a championship team.” Those sentiments were echoed by Barry Wolff. “He’s a really great guy off the ice, he’s a leader, and despite the injuries he faced last season, he did everything he could to be there for his teammates all year long.”
Cam is the first forward of the 2017/18 recruit class for the Clan who look to fill two key positions up front vacated by grads Mike Sandor and Jesse Mysiorek. There should be no issue integrating into the locker room as Cam will join four former Coquitlam Express teammates on the roster this season for SFU.
SFU Men’s Hockey was re-established in 2004 and competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. The program focuses on competition, academics, and community service as its core values. For more information about the SFU Hockey program, please visit www.sfuhockey.com.
