This week, the BCIHL Eligibility Committee issued a ruling that SFU would forfeit 11 games from the spring semester, removing the team from playoff contention.
Unintentionally, we put an ineligible player into our lineup, breaking a league rule allowing player eligibility based on academic good standing. We brought this information forward voluntarily as soon as we were notified of the potential infraction, and we did everything in our power as a sport-club program to assist the Eligibility Committee with the review process.
While we acknowledge the ruling made and the importance of eligibility rules in any collegiate sport, we firmly disagree with the severity of the sanctions based on the conditions surrounding the infraction.
Going forward, we will continue to operate with integrity and represent SFU, our student-athletes and our fans to the best of our ability. We apologize first and foremost to our players who suffer the most as a result of this ruling. We also apologize to our fans, and pledge to come back better than ever for the 2018/19 season.
