If the regular season was any indication, SFU and TWU will elevate BCIHL hockey to a new level as they face off in the BCIHL Semifinals this weekend. TWU will host Game 1 on Thursday March 7th at the Aldergrove Community Arena. The rivals will return to Burnaby on Friday March 8th for a 7pm showdown at Bill Copeland Arena. A third game, if needed, will take place back in Aldergrove on Saturday night.
SFU is coming off a high-scoring home stand against Selkirk College, which saw a 10-0 win and a 6-5 loss. Rookies Mitch Newsome (Coquitlam Express) and Cole Plotnikoff (Kindersley Klippers) capped off their strong rookie regular seasons each with 4 points over the weekend and finishing 1st and 3rd in team scoring respectively.
Defenceman Mathew Berry-Lamontagna (Coquitlam Express) would also earn himself 4 points on the weekend, capping another stellar season finishing top-20 in league scoring. The game also cemented Berry-Lamontagna in the record books, having played 121 consecutive games and leading the BCIHL for all time points and goals by a defenceman.
SFU is 3-4-0-0 against top-ranked TWU this season, and will surely need to play their best hockey of the year in order to beat the defending champions. However the team has found a hot glove in rookie netminder Michael Lenko at the right time, who has 2 shutouts in his last 3 games. SFU has also won of the of the last 3 against TWU, with both wins coming in January.
If the team find similar results this weekend they have a good shot at taking down TWU. The Spartans are led by forwards Evan Last (Swan Valley Stampeders), Jarrett Fontaine (Humboldt Broncos), and defenceman Dustin Degeau (Fort Frances Lakers)
Friday’s home game will benefit the Burnaby Down Syndrome Reasearch Foundation. DSRF offers a wide variety of educational opportunities to children and young adults with Down syndrome, including ground-breaking one to one reading and math instruction, speech language therapy, occupational therapy, and a variety of adult education programs which prepare our students to live full and fulfilling lives in the community and workplace.
