It will be another Family Day classic as SFU aims to bring the action to Burnaby for an afternoon matinee game against the BCIHL’s top-ranked TWU Spartans.
SFU came out of the Christmas Break firing on all cylinders with mid-season recruits Jakob Kranabetter, Kyle Bergh and Daniyal Nussipakynov each contributing in a 5-4 win over TWU in Langley on January 3rd. SFU had built up a 3 goal lead going into the third period, but would have to hang on as penalty trouble and a pair of TWU goals brought the Spartans to within 1.
The rematch came on January 26th, as SFU looked to rebound after a pair of road losses to UVIC and VIU the week prior. SFU would treat fans in attendance, including members of the 2009/2010 championship winning squad, to an entertaining and physical affair that would set up a much anticipated third meeting between the rivals.
Coquitlam Express Alum Mitch Newsome continued his strong rookie campaign with his 6th and 7th goals, while veteran Graham Smerek chipped in with a shorthanded goal and Darnel St. Pierre iced it with a goal in the third period, giving SFU the 4-2 victory.
A decimated SFU blueline has been slowly but surely improving as rookies Arjan Cheema and Arjun Badh have found chemistry and an increase in ice-time. Surrey Eagles alum Domenic Masellis has been out since October due to injury.
The January 26th showdown didn’t end without drama as Nic Holowko found himself in a pile of bodies after driving the net and taking out TWU netminder Lukas Mills.
The puck drops on the third matchup at 3:00pm on Monday February 18th. SFU will be on-hand for the Family Day festivities at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre prior to the game, handing out tickets and greeting fans.
