The final game of the 2014/15 BCIHL regular season is upon us as the Simon Fraser University Clan welcomes the University of Victoria Vikes to Bill Copeland Arena. With Victoria losing to the Trinity Western Spartans last night, the Clan sit ahead of Victoria for third place in the BCIHL. As such, the regular season finale shapes up to be a battle for third place in the BCIHL.
The Clan and Vikes have played six times already with SFU trailing the season series 2-4. Victoria also has taken both games so far in 2015.
Victoria poses an interesting threat to SFU in that the Vikes score a lot – they rank third in the BCIHL in goals for – but give up a lot of goals as well, having surrendered 102 in 23 games this season. SFU has scored 22 goals against Victoria through six games, but have only been able to muster four over the last two meetings. Against a team that scores as much as Victoria does, SFU will have to put as many pucks in the back of the net as possible.
Saturday’s affair also marks two special occasions: the annual JDRF night and farewell to the seniors. Every year SFU dons special JDRF jerseys that are auctioned off to benefit type 1 diabetes research, which they will do again against Victoria.
The finale also marks the final regular season home game for the graduating seniors Mike Ball, Jono Ceci, Nick Sandor, Tyler Mah, Andrew Parent, and Jared Eng. All six seniors have been stalwarts in the SFU lineup throughout the years and the team will want to see them off with a win on home ice.
The game is shaping up to be a high scoring affair on a night of many special occasions. The best way to commemorate such a beneficial cause as the JDRF and such an emotional celebration as bidding farewell to the seniors is an exciting hockey game.
