For Immediate Release:
Burnaby, BC – SFU Hockey is proud to announce Forward Mathieu Jallabert as the second recruit of the 2018/19 class. He joins SFU after wrapping up his junior career with the Nanaimo Buccaneers where he was an assistant captain this past season. The product of Nanaimo spend four years in junior hockey with stops in Oceanside and Nanaimo in the VIJHL and a season in the SJHL with the Melville Millionaires.
Upon signing his letter of commitment he said “I’m very excited to be joining their program, very grateful for the opportunity to be able to attend SFU and continue my hockey career. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way, wouldn’t be here without all of them.”
“Matt is a very good skater and can score, so he’ll be a great addition to our group” said SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta. He added that “he’s a good student and will be able to transition to the demands of college hockey smoothly”
During his junior career Mathieu collected 148 points (62g 86a) in 157 regular season games, including an impressive 48 points (21g 27a) in just 34 games this season with the Nanaimo Buccaneers. He followed that up with an impressive performance in the playoffs by adding 15 points (6g 9a) in 10 playoff games.
Mathieu’s coach with Nanaimo, Curt Toneff spoke very highly of the player SFU will be getting. “Mathieu is a very tenacious player that will add a combination of speed skill and grit. Mathieu has been a leader everywhere he has played.”
He describes himself as an “offensive player who can put the puck in the net” which will be important given the departure of some key offensive contributors. He plans to study Kinesiology while at SFU
With the graduation of five forwards, there will be plenty of opportunity for freshman to lay claim to a spot in the line-up during the 2018/19 season.
