The 2019/20 season got off on the right foot as a young SFU squad took down the defending BCIHL champs TWU in pre-season action.
One of only three freshmen on the TWU roster, Josh Bruce opened the scoring for the Spartans 3 minutes into the first period with a powerplay goal after finding a rebound alone in front of the SFU net. It would be the only goal to slip past SFU starting netminder Patrick Zubick.
SFU, with 13 freshmen to start the year, tied it late in the first period when former Nipawin Hawk Christian Bosa banked one in at a bad angle after a shot from the blueline from WHL and BCHL vet Jordan Dawson. They came out firing in the second period as former Surrey Eagle and Coquitlam Express Ty Westgard scored just over a minute into the period with a nifty top corner shot from the top of the circles. Just 20 seconds later, Jake Keremidschieff added another on a similar play. 90 seconds later SFU would add one for good measure as former North Van Wolf Pack Justin Lee set up Dawson with a nice pass on a 2-on-1 rush.
Bruce, a former teammate of Westgard with the Express, would add 2 more for TWU in the third period to complete the hattrick, but sophomore Arjun Badh would ice the game for SFU with an empty net goal late in the third period.
Sophomore netminder Michael Lenko took over from Zubick in the third, and also had a good showing, helping earn SFU the win.
SFU’s pre-season only gets more difficult as they head east to take on NCAA Division 1 Sacred Heart University and College of the Holy Cross for a pair of games on October 5th and 6th. Live updates will be posted on the SFU twitter account.
SFU opens the regular season at home on Friday October 11th against the Vancouver Island University Mariners. SFU will debut their new jerseys at this game, as well as honor the PIJHL’s North Vancouver Wolfpack. Click here to purchase your tickets today.
