GAMEDAY | Red Leafs take on Thunderbirds to Kick Off Non-Conference Play

VANCOUVER – Simon Fraser University is set to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds for the season’s first local rivalry matchup.

The new-look Red Leafs are looking to defeat UBC for the first time in 11 years, when they defeated the Thunderbirds 3-1 in the 2012 University Hockey Classic.

During the 2022.23 season, the Red Leafs suffered two losses to the Thunderbirds, with the first being a 3-0 defeat in September, where netminder Cale Dolan stopped 50 of 52 shots faced. Then in January, the Red Leafs took the Thunderbirds to overtime in front of over 1,000 faithful at Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, where UBC would ultimately come away with the win.

This game will also be the debut for several of the Red Leafs recruits, including goaltender Kolby Matthews, who transfered to the Red Leafs from the Rochester Institute of Technology this season.

Puck drop is at 7:00pm PT at the Father David Bauer Arena in the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at UBC (6066 Thunderbird Blvd., Vancouver, BC); no broadcasting info is available, and general admission is free at the door.
