Dear SFU Hockey friends & families,
This year, SFU enters its 13th BCIHL season. With a new group of recruits from across Canada, SFU Hockey now provides opportunity for high-school graduates from a wide array of Canadian towns & cities including Burnaby, Kelowna, Fort McMurray, Saskatoon, Nanaimo and even Gabriola Island.
The SFU roster features players studying in fields such as Earth Science (#9 Graham Smerek), Actuarial Science (#16 Ryker Moreau), Business Administration (#17 Brendan Lamont), Cognitive Science (#27 Darnel St. Pierre) and Environmental Science (#28 Mathew Berry-Lamontagna). Some of our players will continue their careers playing professional hockey, but most will go into their respective areas of study. The SFU Men’s Hockey team’s mission is not only to represent SFU at the highest competitive level possible, but also to prepare these student-athletes for their careers and to become strong contributing members of society. We achieve this by supporting our players with financial and academic support through scholarships, work opportunities and academic tutoring. We also use the SFU Hockey platform to create community service opportunities and showcase our players’ athletic talents. In 11 years, we’ve distributed over $90,000 in scholarship funds and graduated over 150 student-athletes. This fall, SFU will fly north to Alaska to take on NCAA Division 1 programs from UAA in Fairbanks and Anchorage, providing our team an opportunity to play against some of best university athletes in North America.
This mission is a difficult one. Most junior programs of a similar caliber have either significant player fees, or an owner willing to fund the team. Unfortunately, as a club team with little university funding, SFU Hockey has neither. Instead we rely on the generous donations of Alumni as well as many local friends and families. SFU also has a comprehensive Sponsorship & Advertising program and works directly with many local businesses to boost brand & product engagement and offer valuable advertising opportunities.
Our goals for this season are to break our attendance record at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre (1,600), to have all 28 players finish the year in high academic standing, and to win our fourth BCIHL Championship.
In order to achieve these goals, we must raise at least $20,000 this summer. This, when added to our in-season fundraisers and corporate partners, will allow us to meet our operating budget of $120,000. So today we are launching our donation campaign which includes the following options:
$100 donation – help cover tutoring costs for the players
$250 donation – help with team meals on the road
$500 Coach’s Club donation – help with equipment costs including helmets and gloves
$1,000 Gold Club donation – help with hotel costs
$5,000 Platinum Club donation – help with bus travel and scholarship costs
SFU Hockey will provide a charitable donation tax receipt upon request. With your approval, all club donations are recognised publicly by the team.
Thank you on behalf of the SFU Men’s Hockey Team!
